Print Story
It was a challenge for me to embark on designing a paisley print. I've resisted it for years, surrounded by its ubiquity during my travels to India and my time at Polo. With walls adorned in paisley, I believed little could be added to the motif.
Yet, Paisley's rich history, spanning from Persia to India, England, and Scotland, captivates with its teardrop and floral elements. Some trace its origins to Zoroastrian roots in the 1400s, symbolizing nature's beauty.
So, how did I approach my rendition of paisley?
I began by dissecting each component, retaining only those I adored. The teardrop was essential, complemented by minimal florals. I aimed for simplicity, avoiding the clutter seen in many prints. For sleepwear and robes, less is more.
After crafting a repeat pattern with my chosen elements, the challenge of color arose. While I admired the vibrant hues of Madison Avenue's Etro store, I sought novelty. After countless trials, I had an epiphany: simplicity in monochrome. Unlike the riotous colors of traditional paisleys, mine would be outlined, exuding understated elegance.
In the end, I believe this rendition stays true to my design ethos. I hope you find it as enchanting as I do.
